Police have arrested a 41-year-old male Customs and Exercise officer in a corruption and bribery case at Oshikango on Wednesday.
According to Chief Inspector Abner Agas the man will appear in court today, either in Ohangwena or Eenhana. He said information so far indicates that this Officer allegedly forced foreign business people at Oshikango to provide their Imports of Goods documentations at his demand. Apparently many of the business people do not carry their documents on them. These documents are commonly held by auditors, in Windhoek, or somewhere else and could not be provided immediately and on random demand. The officer then allegedly threatened business people with court unless they pay a him a certain amount. Because most of these businesspeople were afraid to be taken to court they allegedly paid him the money to stay out of court. It was only fairly recently that one of the businessmen reported this and it led to the officer’s arrest on Wednesday.’Now we have him, and we are investigating. Their might be more then one officer. We will see, and let you know,’ Agas said yesterday.
