Culture provides sense of belonging – Mbunza chief

Chief Alfons Kaundu of the Mbunza Traditional Authority says culture is the foundation on which communities are built.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the International University of Management (IUM) Cultural Festival, which kicked off on Wednesday and will run until Friday.

“Culture is the moral compass that guides our actions, the rhythm that beats in our hearts, and the song that tells our story. It is through culture that we find our sense of belonging, our identity, and our purpose,” Kaundu said.

He said it is important to acknowledge the challenges that come with achieving cultural diversity.

“We are faced with the task of preserving our traditions while adapting to the demands of modern society. This is no easy task, but it is one we must undertake with courage and determination,” Kaundu said.

He said education plays a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage.

Institutions such as the IUM are not just places of learning, they are sanctuaries where cultures can be studied, understood, and preserved for future generations, he said.

“But preservation alone is not enough. We must also embrace our diverse cultures as living, evolving entities. We must celebrate the ways in which they interact, influence, and enrich one another,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, acting IUM vice chancellor Charles Makanyeza said the cultural festival highlights the traditions which make the university unique.

“As we embark on this immense journey through history and culture, we are reminded of the profound beauty and significance our diverse backgrounds bring to our collective identity.

“Let us embrace this opportunity to explore and appreciate the depth of our cultural mosaic and the enduring connections it fosters among us all,” Makanyeza said.

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Echoes of the Past: Embracing our Diverse Cultures.

Makanyeza said the theme connects young people with the rich traditions and heritage of the past.

Ovaherero, Oshiwambo and Khoe Khoe dancing groups entertained festivalgoers on Wednesday.
