The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has started capturing the 146 animals worth N$7,5 million which are a donation to the government of Cuba.
So far kudu, gemsbok, eland, buffalo, springbok, roan antelope and hartebeest have been captured. The animals are darted from a helicopter in the Waterberg Plateau Park before they are transported to a quarantine facility. They will be flown to Cuba in October. ‘We are capturing young animals, thus we are using the helicopter so we can choose which once to dart and capture rather than building bomas and capturing a whole herd,’ said veterinarian Dr Mark Jargo.
