TWO people were killed by wild animals and another was injured in the Kavango and Caprivi regions at the beginning of this month, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism said yesterday.
Kalumbi Shangula, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, said a 14-year-old girl, Nangana Dikuaa, was killed by a crocodile while swimming in the Okavango River in the Shadikongoro area on January 1.
In the Caprivi Region, a 24-year-old man, Justine Masiye Mushabati, drowned in the Chobe River in the Nakabolelwa area after a canoe he was fishing from was overturned by a hippo on Tuesday this week.
‘As a result of this attack he drowned,’ Shangula said in a statement.
In another incident, a 75-year-old woman was injured by a crocodile in the Mupapama area while she was washing clothes in the Okavango River on January 4.
She was bitten in her legs and is receiving treatment in the Rundu State Hospital.
Shangula warned people living along rivers in the northern and north-eastern regions not to take risks that may result in further loss of life.
‘We advise that people should collect water from the river and immediately move to the banks, where they can conduct their usual activities such as bathing and washing clothes ‘ said Shangula.
