Crackdown on drunk driving at Keetmanshoop

KEETMANSHOOP Police swooped on 11 drunk drivers – one woman and 10 men – in a surprise operation conducted jointly with the local municipal traffic officers and members of the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund. The Head of the Keetmanshoop Municipality’s traffic department, Wimpy Losper, said they pulled over cars and conducted breath tests on Friday and Saturday.

The operation came shortly after the MVA Fund and Keetmanshoop Municipality signed an agreement on road safety. At the signing MVA Board of Trustees member Welma Enssle said collective efforts are needed to reduce road deaths. She urged all law enforcement officers to perform their duties without fear or favour. Enssle further urged magistrates to come up with innovative ways to penalise those guilty of traffic offences, especially drunken driving. She believes fines do not deter drunk-driving offenders.Keetmanshoop Mayor Basil Brown hailed the agreement as a milestone for the Keetmanshoop Municipality, saying traffic control information sharing is of the utmost importance. luqman@namibian.com.na
