LUDERITZ – The first phase of the Sand Hotel Housing project here is progressing well.
Sand Hotel is an informal settlement where residents live in cramped conditions with no formal water or sanitation facilities. Luderitz Town Clerk Elia Kangandjera told Nampa in an interview on Tuesday that about 800 households from Sand Hotel are expected to be relocated to a reception area just behind the informal settlement – towards Agate Park and Agate Beach.Kangandjera said the municipality was servicing the area, which entails the provision of bulk water and sewerage services. The first phase of the project is expected to cost N$11 million. The Ministry of Regional and Local Government and Housing ploughed in N$10 million, while the Luderitz Town Council pledged the remaining N$1 million. The second phase of the project will entail the planning and design of plots at the reception area, including water and sewerage services to individual erven.Kangandjera said four areas at the town had been identified for housing. The construction of the houses is expected to start in 2004.”Once these areas are developed those people who would be living in the reception area and would like to own their own houses would have to apply for a house and move out from the reception area,” he noted. This would allow other households to occupy plots left by those who moved out from their plots. The European Union and the MRLGH will assist with the development.Kangandjera said although the project would initially only cater for residents of the infamous Sand Hotel, people living in backyard shacks would also be accommodated at a later stage.”By the end of the day we would like to eliminate Sand Hotel and backyard squatting,” he stressed.- NampaLuderitz Town Clerk Elia Kangandjera told Nampa in an interview on Tuesday that about 800 households from Sand Hotel are expected to be relocated to a reception area just behind the informal settlement – towards Agate Park and Agate Beach.Kangandjera said the municipality was servicing the area, which entails the provision of bulk water and sewerage services. The European Union and the MRLGH will assist with the development.Kangandjera said although the project would initially only cater for residents of the infamous Sand Hotel, people living in backyard shacks would also be accommodated at a later stage.”By the end of the day we would like to eliminate Sand Hotel and backyard squatting,” he stressed.- Nampa
