Cops foil attempted robbery

A VOLLEY of bullets from the Windhoek City Police last night foiled an attempt by two alleged thieves to rob a pair of Canadian tourists near the Louis Botha cafe in Windhoek West.

One of the suspects was hit in the back as the duo tried to flee in a white Honda station wagon taxi. He died on the scene. The driver of the taxi managed to get away.The incident happened at around 18h30, as the two Canadians were returning to a bed and breakfast establishment situated on nearby Puccini Street. According to the Police, the dead suspect allegedly grabbed a handbag from one of the victims before jumping into the taxi.City Police officers were in the vicinity, and reportedly heard the two women screaming for help.Onlookers reported witnessing one officer firing off about 10 bullets at the car.The vehicle came to a halt on a pavement near the Louis Botha cafe after Police shot out the rear left tire.The handbag was retrieved inside a black refuse bag in the taxi.
