THE Swapo Government had experienced problems with non-compliance of contractors with regard drought relief.
In a speech delivered over the weekend at Helao Nafidi village in Ohangwena, President Hifikepunye Pohamba said that the Government had allocated more than N$200 million towards drought relief, food-for-work and cash-for-work programmes. It had also expanded school feeding programmes.
However he added that ‘our Government has since experienced supply problems with some of the successful tenderers’.
He had been informed that in the Ohangwena Region, a contract to supply 3,917 tonnes of maize meal, 119 tonnes of tinned fish and 105 tonnes of cooking oil had been awarded to tenderers but that ‘contractors are having some difficulties in honouring the contract’.
‘I therefore appeal to all contractors who are not performing, to pull up their socks. We cannot allow a situation where our people are hungry while money is allocated to supply them with food’, the President warned.
He therefore directed the Office of the Prime Minister to ensure that the food was speedily delivered to the needy.
‘Those contractors who cannot perform should be immediately identified and the situation rectified as soon as possible,’ the President concluded.
