A MAN going around at the coast posing as a Namibian Food and Allied Workers’ Union (Nafau) representative has allegedly been trying to ‘borrow’ money from businesses to fix a union car.
Nafau (Swakopmund) Branch Organiser, Marin Nepembe, said the man has signed IOUs with several businesses at Swakopmund and probably at Walvis Bay as well. It is suspected that he may already have swindled businesses out of thousands of dollars since last week.’We don’t know who this man is. On the one hand he gave his name as Tobias Sakaria, with a copy of an ID,’ said Nepembe. ‘And then there is another IOU giving the name of David Lenga. We don’t know if this is the same person, or a group working together, but the same cellphone number is given on all the IOU slips.’An attempt was made to contact the person, but after hearing that he had been exposed, he switched off the phone.Nepembe said Nafau has a log report of their vehicle’s whereabouts. The vehicle did not need repair on any of the dates on which the IOU’s were made, he said. The case has been handed to the Police, but businesses are warned not to lend money to a so-called representative of Nafau, or any other union for that matter. ‘Nafau does not go to businesses to ask for money to repair their car,’ Nepembe said. ‘If there are more businesses involved, they should please contact us or the Police.’
