Coastal couple land ‘big one’

THE birth of an exceptional baby has had doctors and nurses at the Swakopmund State Hospital buzzing with surprise and excitement since the beginning of the week.

Scales and measuring tapes were checked and re-checked to verify the baby girl’s weight – a hefty 6,58 kg, body length (excluding her head) of 59 centimetres and head of 39 centimetres in circumference. Sandra Naris of Walvis Bay delivered the sturdy girl by Caesarean section shortly after five on Monday afternoon.She never guessed that her second baby would be such a big one, Naris told The Namibian yesterday.She said her firstborn, also a girl, weighed 4,3 kg at birth, and she was completely surprised when she heard the results of the post-natal measurements.Both she and the baby’s father are proud of their strong, healthy offspring, said Naris.They haven’t decided what to call her yet, but meanwhile she will go by her traditional name, /Khom-Tere, which means ‘mercy’.Perhaps she will become a policewoman when she grows up, said Naris.The delivery went smoothly and both mother and infant are in good health, according to nurses.They will both remain in hospital for a few more days to recover./Khom-Tere can boast that she’s the biggest baby ever to be born at the Swakopmund State Hospital, but it could not be confirmed whether her arrival has earned her a national title.According to an Internet search, the biggest newborn in the world was an Italian boy who weighed 10,34 kg at birth.An eight-kilogram boy was born in Brazil last month.Sandra Naris of Walvis Bay delivered the sturdy girl by Caesarean section shortly after five on Monday afternoon.She never guessed that her second baby would be such a big one, Naris told The Namibian yesterday.
