Coalitions unfair: Nangof

WINDHOEK – The Chairman of the Namibia Non-Governmental Organisations Forum (Nangof) is proposing an amendment to the country’s electoral laws to make it illegal for political parties, particularly opposition parties, to form coalitions after election results are announced.

Sandi Tjaronda said post-election coalitions are unfair to the voter, whose consent is never solicited. “If there is an appropriate time to merge, it is only morally and ethically right to do so during the pre-election phase, which is now or never,” Tjaronda said.Nangof has trained 400 observers to monitor next month’s elections. They have been already deployed to their respective regions.NGO meeting ‘badly timed’WINDHOEK – Political parties failed to turn up at a meeting organised by the Namibia Non-Governmental Organisations Forum (Nangof). The meeting was called to provide a platform for representatives of political parties, NGOs and the Electoral Commission to share information about next month’s elections. The DTA and the Republican Party told Nampa that they could not attend because they had had to finalise their lists of candidates, which had to be handed over to the ECN on the same day.The CoD said it had not received Nangof’s invitation.GRN vehicles to be utilisedWINDHOEK – The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has secured vehicles from Government to be used in the upcoming elections.Government has provided 1 019 cars, two helicopters to be used in Katima Mulilo and the Kunene Region, and one boat to reach voters on islands in the Caprivi Region.Elections Director Phillemon Kanime says the vehicles will be sent to the regions as soon as the regional election co-ordinators finish their training next week. The Deputy Director of the Government Garage, Armas Malima, told Nampa that not all the cars are new but are in good condition.- Nampa”If there is an appropriate time to merge, it is only morally and ethically right to do so during the pre-election phase, which is now or never,” Tjaronda said.Nangof has trained 400 observers to monitor next month’s elections. They have been already deployed to their respective regions.NGO meeting ‘badly timed’ WINDHOEK – Political parties failed to turn up at a meeting organised by the Namibia Non-Governmental Organisations Forum (Nangof). The meeting was called to provide a platform for representatives of political parties, NGOs and the Electoral Commission to share information about next month’s elections. The DTA and the Republican Party told Nampa that they could not attend because they had had to finalise their lists of candidates, which had to be handed over to the ECN on the same day.The CoD said it had not received Nangof’s invitation.GRN vehicles to be utilised WINDHOEK – The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has secured vehicles from Government to be used in the upcoming elections.Government has provided 1 019 cars, two helicopters to be used in Katima Mulilo and the Kunene Region, and one boat to reach voters on islands in the Caprivi Region.Elections Director Phillemon Kanime says the vehicles will be sent to the regions as soon as the regional election co-ordinators finish their training next week. The Deputy Director of the Government Garage, Armas Malima, told Nampa that not all the cars are new but are in good condition.- Nampa
