Civics out, Stars and BA advance

ELEVEN Arrows found their way into the quarter-finals of the MTC NFA Cup after they brushed aside league defending champions Civics 3-1 in the biggest upset of the competition so far at the J.

Stephanus Stadium at Keetmanshoop on Saturday. African Stars squeezed past Oshakati City in a frantic penalty shootout which saw them winning 5-4 after a one-all draw at full time, while Black Africa powered their way to a 5-1 win over Major Power, with both matches played at the Mokati Stadium in Otjiwarongo.Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) were in commanding form when they outclassed Blue Boys 4-0, also at Otjiwarongo, while Ramblers sailed through after winning a penalty shootout 4-3 against Invincible at Keetmanshoop.Mighty Gunners were the better side over Volcano when they hammered them 5-1, while Eleven Brothers got the better of Rundu Chiefs with a 3-1 winning margin.Both matches were played in Otjiwarongo.Orlando Pirates were in devastating form as they blasted nine goals without a response against Tough Guys at Keetmanshoop.At Keetmanshoop, Eleven Arrows striker Robson Haitamba opened the score line in the first minute when he tapped in a cross ball following a defensive lapse by Civics defenders.In the seventh minute Mervin Katjiveri scored to extend the lead to 2-0 after another Civics defensive lapse.Civics attacking midfielder Rudi Louw reduced the deficit with a close-range shot, leaving the Arrows goalkeeper nowhere, after the Civilians showed some spark when they knitted some brilliant passes.Civics striker William Chilufya wasted two golden opportunities to make the score board equal.Arrows led 2-1 at the break.In the second half, despite going on an attacking mode, attempts by Civics to bring the scoreboard to equal terms failed.The Civilians were given another blow when their diligent defender Donnelly Nel was carried off the field with a hamstring injury.Arrows wasted no time, with the defence of Civics in total disarray, when Rudolf Bester sealed the win for Arrows in the 63rd minute of a game that saw Civics failing to respond in time to rescue their chances of going through to the next stage.Orlando Pirates striker Saul Coetzee banked for goals for his team.Klaas Blom, Patrick Jagger and Ettienne Beukes engineered Pirates’ win with their awesome dribbling skills.Ramblers had no easy game against Invincible and had to come back from behind to force a one-all draw in the dying minutes of the game.Similarly at Otjiwarongo, Freedom Puriza equalised in the last moments of the game against City to take the sides to a penalty shootout, which they won under some drizzle.The match was affected by light rain showers resulting in poor ball control and misdirected passes on a slippery pitch.City went ahead in the second half after they resisted the Stars attack which possibly had more chances to put away, but their poor finishing led them down.City were out to embarrass Stars with about four minutes to go, but their defence lost concentration at the most crucial time of the game, giving Stars the chance to equalise.City’s talismanic striker, Cascas Angula, tried in vain to penetrate the Stars defence, while the absence of Johannes Seibeb for Stars was visible in midfield.For Black Africa, striker Jerome Louis pulled off a hat-trick to put his name among those of the leading scorers in the competition.Louis has also been called up to the Brave Warriors squad and with the presence of coach Ben Bamfuchile at the Otjiwarongo matches, he clearly demonstrated his credibility in front of goal.Black Africa played with total command and their
