City dog ‘gives birth to kitten’

WHEN truck driver Silas Isaacs received a call from his family at home yesterday, the last thing he expected to hear was that his pregnant dog had just given birth … apparently to a cat! But that’s exactly what he was told.

By the time Isaacs arrived at his home in Windhoek’s informal settlement of Havana to see the supposed anomaly, neighbours had already started congregating and were looking on curiously. To his amazement, Isaacs found a baby kitten suckling on his “not-so-pregnant-anymore” nameless dog. While his family is adamant that the birth was geniune, Isaacs, after toying with the idea of taking both mom and “pup” to a veterinarian to be checked, said he would rather apply the wait-and-see approach in case the baby “doesn’t just maybe look like a cat”.When he arrived home, Isaacs found some of his neighbours suggesting he burn the newborn animal. He refused.”Only God knows how this happened, maybe it’s leap year,” a female neighbour joked when asked about the incident.
