I AM writing this letter because of the principle behind it.It is with great shock that I discovered how the City of Windhoek discriminates against disabled people.I have recently become disabled and have to make use of the disabled parking. I went about it the legal way by applying for disabled parking at the City of Windhoek. After completion of a form that had to be filled in by myself and my orthopaedic surgeon, together with copies of several documents, I was told to pay N$50.00 per disc (2 for my vehicles I drive) valid for 1 year.I find this totally shocking and unacceptable. At Game centre the disabled parking is forever occupied with vehicles who generally are GRN and taxis, forcing me to rather go to another shopping centre. The normal parking bays are for free but because I am disabled I have to pay for my parking which is 99% used by unauthorised people. At Wernhil shopping centre I have ‘paid’ for my disabled parking and then have to pay the normal parking fees like everyone else.A one-off payment of N$50 is perhaps acceptable to cover the costs for the disc, but paying this for a parking used in my capacity once or twice a month for a year, while other normal people have their parking for free is a disgrace.
