READERS must make sure they provide correct information to the City Police when making use of the 4444 Crime Alert SMS line.

Following criticism from some The Namibian readers that their complaints are being ignored, City Police spokesman Marx Hipandwa said no response meant that incorrect information had been provided to the Police. ‘The whole issue of the SMS [system] is that if we do not respond [to an alert], it most likely means that information sent to us is incorrect, for example, an incorrect street name, location of where the crime is [alleged to have been] committed. Then it becomes difficult to respond.’ Moreover, manpower and petrol are wasted by such incorrect information, he added.Hipandwa appealed to the public to make sure that the information they send is correct and that details about exactly where a crime is alleged to have been committed are included. The spokesperson said the SMS line has ‘really contributed to the reduction of crime’.
