Cash stuffs it up for suspect

SUSPECTED thief Derek van Schalkwyk (38) was arrested at the Swakopmund Municipal Bungalows early Sunday morning with N$229 460 in his possession.

Police swooped on Van Schalkwyk as he was booking in at the bungalows – at around 02h00 – after a municipal employee caught a glimpse of money stuffed into two bags and called the Police, said Erongo Police spokesperson Julia Nujoma.’We immediately sent a team to investigate the matter and found that the suspect was [allegedly] in possession of stolen cash. He was arrested immediately,’ Nujoma said.Bundles of R100 and R200 bills worth N$229 460 were confiscated from Van Schalkwyk.Van Schalkwyk is suspected of having broken into a house at Langstrand on Saturday night.He made his first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of housebreaking, theft and possession of stolen property.Nujoma said it was once again the assistance of the public that helped the Police.’We are encouraged by the community’s assistance in our efforts in making and keeping Erongo safe,’ she said.adam@namibian.com.na
