CAS bars Liberia appeal on African election rules

LAUSANNE – The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it can’t yet consider an appeal by Liberia for interim verdicts against new Confederation of African Football election rules.

Caf passed amendments in September which limit who can challenge long-standing president Issa Hayatou of Cameroon in a vote scheduled for next March. The court says Liberia’s football association has not exhausted Caf’s internal appeal process because, three months later, the continental body still has not provided minutes of the rules meeting in Seychelles.Cas says Liberia could revive its appeal ‘as indicated by the Caf itself.’Hayatou steered through an amendment allowing only voting members of the Caf ruling executive to be presidential candidates.Hayatou’s Fifa executive committee colleague, Jacques Anouma of Ivory Coast, seeks to defy the rule and challenge his boss.- Nampa-AP
