Caprivi Kwando River level rising

THE Caprivi Regional Council has put up tents in some places along the Kwando River to provide shelter to villagers whose homesteads risk being flooded by the rising river.

Caprivi Regional Governor Leonard Mwilima told The Namibian yesterday that his office had dispatched a team on Friday to study the situation.’We have already sent some tents to the area,’ said Mwilima. He said the Kwando rose to over four metres last week and if it continues, some villages will be flooded and people will have to be relocated.Over the weekend, it rained heavily for two days in the Caprivi Region.Mwilima said it seems the rain added to the rising river level. He singled out the villages of Mayuni, Kongola and Sangwali on the banks of the Kwando River as those at risk of flooding.Earlier this year, Caprivi was hit by heavy floods that disrupted schools and other social services and destroyed roads.absalom@namibian.com.na
