Namibia’s Capricorn Eagles bounced back with an emphatic 10-wicket victory against China at the Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series in Hong Kong yesterday.
After losing their opening match by six wickets to Thailand on Wednesday, Namibia gave a much better performance yesterday when they thrashed China by 10 wickets, with 95 balls remaining.
China won the toss and elected to bat, but after a hesitant start the wickets started to tumble.
Irene van Zyl dismissed both openers, Zi Mei for 2 and Jing Yang for 11, and when Kayleen Green bowled Mengting Liu for a duck they were three down for 19.
Victoria Hamunyela dismissed Cai Yuzhi for 4, and although there was a bit of a middle order revival, the entry of Wilka Mwatile into the bowling attack changed all of that.
She dismissed Xu Qiuan and Jiaping Li off successive balls and grabbed two more wickets down the order as China could only post a meagre total of 55/9 off their 20 overs.
Mwatile led the way with four wickets for six runs, while Van Zyl took 2/1.
Namibia had no trouble reaching the target as captain Sune Wittmann led the charge smashing 48 not out off only 20 balls, which included 10 fours, while Edelle van Zyl remained not out on eight as they reached 56 without loss off only four overs.
On Wednesday, Namibia got off to a losing start as they suffered a six-wicket defeat to Thailand.
Namibia posted a total of 94 runs for seven wickets, which Thailand comfortably reached with six wickets in hand and two overs to spare.
In Namibia’s innings, Wittmann was once again the stand-out batter, scoring 33 runs off 40 balls (6×4), while Edelle van Zyl added 13, Jurriene Diergaardt 11 and Mekelaye Mwatile 10.
Thailand reached 95/4 off 18 overs with captain Naruemol Chaiwai scoring 31 not out and Phannita Maya 28 not out.
Thailand also beat Hong Kong by 69 runs yesterday to go to the top of the four nation log on four points, followed by Namibia and Hong Kong on two points each and China on zero.
Namibia’s next match is against Hong Kong tomorrow.
