Canal vandals charged in the North

TWELVE people have been arrested in the North for damaging the Olushandja-Oshakati canal.

NamWater says the vandalism has delayed repairs to the canal after it was damaged by floodwater last month.NamWater spokesman Johannes Shigwedha says the 12 suspects were charged with malicious damage to property and released on bail of N$500 each.According to the water utility, the damage to the canal amounts to N$400 000.’It has been observed that a number of civilians have been damaging the canal, especially between Outapi and Oshakati, in their quest to catch fish or redirect water to their mahangu fields,’ says Shigwedha.NamWater urges people not to fish in the canal and to remove all their fishing nets, as they slow down the flow of water.
