Buffalo calves fall victim to floods

TWO buffalo calves stranded in floodwater in eastern Caprivi have died.

Floodwater trapped more than 200 buffaloes on an island at Kasika last month, and another 150 were stranded on an island at Kabulabula, also in eastern Caprivi.
The Chief Control Warden for the Caprivi and Kavango regions, Charles Musiyalike, said the two calves died on April 8 while the buffaloes at Kasika were moving to another island about 500 metres further along.
He said the others made it to the second island and now have access to other patches of dry land surrounded by shallower water.
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is feeding the trapped buffaloes with lucerne and salt licks. Last week, an adult buffalo was injured in a food stampede and later died.
