‘Bright prospects for mining’

NAMIBIA will soon have a new gold mine in the Otavi, Grootfontein and Otjiwarongo area after successful explorations done during the last 12 months, President Hifikepunye Pohamba announced yesterday.

Pohamba said in his second State of the Nation address that the results of the exploration were promising and Namibia could soon have a new gold mine. He said diamond exploration had also intensified in the eastern parts of the Kavango region and around Tsumkwe.”The future prospects for mining in our country look bright. This can be attributed to our socio-political stability, a competitive mining and fiscal regime, availability of geological data, as well as the exciting opportunities for the exploitation of various minerals,” he said.Pohamba said he was also pleased that the life of Roessing Uranium Mine had been extended to 2016.”This means more years of employment for the workers and incomes for their families,” he said. The Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine will start production in September, while work is underway to open the Trekkopje Uranium Mine near Arandis.”The opening of the new mines will create more employment opportunities and make Namibia one of the primary uranium producers in Africa,” Pohamba said.In a one-and-a-half-hour speech that touched on almost all sectors, Pohamba said unity was the most important factor before the country could prosper.”Let us make Namibia a nation of hard workers pursuing a common goal of national, social and economic development.Let us unite and reposition our country for the achievement of our National Development Plans and Vision 2030,” he said.Pohamba’s address was also attended by former President Sam Nujoma, who was first seated in the public gallery before he was invited by Swapo Chief Whip Ben Amathila to join MPs in the chamber.Nujoma was the first to congratulate Pohamba after his address.
