IN a dramatic Cabinet reshuffle, President Hifikepunye Pohamba made a major change to his executive, which saw Hage Geingob returning as prime minister.
The reshuffle comes two days after the conclusion of the Swapo Party fifth congress, which re-elected Geingob as the party’s vice president.Geingob replaces Nahas Angula, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Defence. The former defence minister, Charles Namoloh, moves to the Ministry of Regional and Local Government and Housing.Former Local Government Minister Jerry Ekandjo replaces Kazenambo Kazembo as Minister of Youth. Kazenambo features nowhere in Pohamba’s new Cabinet.The reshuffle also saw two deputy ministers promoted to ministerial portfolios.Calle Schlettwein, who served as deputy minister of finance, has been moved up to become the minister of trade and industry, replacing Geingob.The former deputy minister of environment and tourism, Uahekua Herunga, has been appointed as minister in the same ministry.Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was at Environment and Tourism, takes up position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Utoni Nujoma is the new justice minister.Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana moves to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immanuel Ngatjizeko to Safety and Security to replace the newly elected secretary general of the Swapo Party, Nangolo Mbumba, who will serve the party full time.A number of deputy ministers were reshuffled, but no one lost his or her job.Laura McLeod-Katjirua, who was elected the deputy secretary general of Swapo at the weekend congress, has been appointed as governor of the Khomas Region and will be replaced by Otjozondjupa Governor Rapama Kamehozu in Omaheke.Samuel Nuuyoma replaces Kamehozu as governor in the Otjozondjupa Region.
