Border control a priority

MOTIVATING her budget of N$152,8 million for the current financial year, Home Affairs Minister Rosalia Nghidinwa said globalisation and increased travel through Namibia has prompted the need for urgent upgrading of the country’s border-post infrastructure.

‘Borders in the north and northeastern regions of our country are vast and densely populated. There are at the moment limited entry points and as a result it encourages illegal crossing,’ she said. The Ministry plans to respond to this need by opening additional border posts at the Omusati, Kunene, Kavango and Caprivi regions, pending agreement with the Zambian government.Nghidinwa said the Ministry recently replaced its old border control management system with one capable of reading electronic passports.’This system will be critical for the management of movement of persons especially during the upcoming 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup and the African Cup of Nations to be held by South Africa and Angola respectively,’ she said.
