Blood again in short supply

THE Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia is urgently in need of blood and people are encouraged to donate blood at any of the following mobile clinics.

On Wednesday people can donate in Rehoboth at the St Mary’s Roman Catholic Hospital from 13h00 to 17h30, in Windhoek at the Ministry of Finance from 09h00 to 11h00 and at Maerua Mall from 12h00 to 15h00. Also on Wednesday, people can donate blood in Swakopmund at Woermann & Brock from 09h00 to 14h00.
On Friday the mobile clinic will be at Siemens Omnitel in Windhoek’s Northern Industrial Area from 10h00 to 14h00.
Donors are also welcome to donate at any of the service’s fixed centres on weekdays from 09h00 to 16h00. The fixed centres in Windhoek are in the Hidas Centre, in United House and at the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia’s headquarters in Tal Street.
The reason for the extreme shortage of blood is that most people are away on holiday and the usage was more than the intake over the new year period.
Although the Blood Transfusion Service stocked up and had the best Christmas season ever, it is once again experiencing the same shortage as at the end of November.
The service currently has only 112 units of O-group blood – about 95 units less than the minimum stock it tries to keep.
