Biwa wins a third term

KEETMANSHOOP – Andreas Biwa was re-elected as the Mayor of Keetmanshoop Mayor for a third time on Friday.

Biwa is a member of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance-United Democratic Front (DTA-UDF) coalition. Both Swapo and the DTA-UDF Coalition have three members each, while the Keetmanshoop Concerned People’s Organisation (KCPO) holds the swing vote.The KCPO switched its alliance from Swapo to the coalition two years ago.KCPO member Roelof van Wyk was elected as Deputy Mayor.The all-female Swapo faction had to be content with only one representative on the three-member Management Committee, Councillor Aune Kapia.The other management committee members are DTA-UDF coalition councillors Nicholaas Christiaan (Chairperson) and Willem Kotze.Listing achievements during his past tenure as Mayor, Biwa pointed to the tarring of roads in previously disadvantaged residential areas, a “very successful” town clean-up campaign and the provision of housing for the disadvantaged.He added that an upcoming Karas investors’ conference, regional Independence celebrations, the provision of additional housing and the instalment of water meters were on the agenda for the coming year.Biwa stressed that it was the duty of councillors to pave the way for those who would be elected in May this year when Local Authority elections take place.- NampaBoth Swapo and the DTA-UDF Coalition have three members each, while the Keetmanshoop Concerned People’s Organisation (KCPO) holds the swing vote.
