Bicycles to help children in need RUNDU

The Bicycle Empowerment Network (BEN) in Namibia last week donated 10 bicycles to projects for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) at Ndama and Mavanze villages in the Kavango Region.

Speaking at the handover, Regional Councillor Herbert Shixwameni said OVC projects needed such donations so that they could achieve their goals. He said the bicycles would be used by committee members of the two projects to visit children to assess the situation in their homes as well as to help transport children to the nearest clinics or hospitals. He appealed to local communities to take care of the bicycles and use them for their intended purpose.Shixwameni also called on the local business community to emulate the example of BEN in assisting needy children.BEN started operating from Windhoek in May last year.Managing Director Linke Michael says the organisation receives second-hand bicycles from the United Kingdom and North America, which are distributed to various projects in Namibia.Other beneficiaries have been HIV-AIDS home-based caregivers.Michael said plans were underway to start to create a network of small entrepreneurs who could repair and sell donated bicycles to generate income. This first donation in the Kavango Region was made after the Tereza Orphans and Vulnerable Children project at Mavanze requested assistance from BEN earlier this year.- NampaHe said the bicycles would be used by committee members of the two projects to visit children to assess the situation in their homes as well as to help transport children to the nearest clinics or hospitals. This first donation in the Kavango Region was made after the Tereza Orphans and Vulnerable Children project at Mavanze requested assistance from BEN earlier this year.- Nampa
