Beauties, Queens face off

THE astronomical goal-scoring margins by Okahandja Beauties and Rehoboth Queens are set to temporarily come to an end, when the two women’s football giants go head to head in a derby in Windhoek tomorrow.

Beauties come from their biggest win this season when they demolished Angels United 20-0, while Queens were equally on cruise control when they easily dispatched Shifidi Babes 10-0, in Khomas Women’s Football League matches played last weekend. Both teams have the cream of the crop in women’s football and their encounter, which is slated for 10h00 at Eldorado Secondary School, will have nothing less than sparks flying.Beauties, sitting pretty at the top of the summit, have a whopping 67 goals scored from only six matches to date, while Queens are in second with 21 goals from only four matches. To date, Beauties have only conceded one goal, while Queens have let in three balls. But the free-scoring trend is somehow set to be reversed as both teams want to end in a favourable position as the first round comes to an end tomorrow. The title will be decided between the two and what matters now is for both to get the needed results tomorrow and again in the second leg.Beauties will rely on their national team ‘galacticos’ such as Kleintjie Fredericks, Stella Williams, Shirley Cloete and Charmaine Swartbooi, who last weekend ran rings around their opponents and laid siege to Angels’ goals.Fredericks, nicknamed ‘Messi’, consolidated her position as the leading goal-getter in the league last weekend, with 16 goals to her credit. Her team mate, Williams, nicknamed ‘Torres’, is in second on 13.Beauties lead the log with 18 points, six points ahead of Queens, with the newly formed Jacqui Shipanga Under-15 Soccer Academy in third with 10 points.Queens have reliable customers to do the job in national team striker Leandriiii Lukas, who scored four goals last weekend, while Yvonne Skrywer and Marchelle Jansen can also cause mayhem. Both teams are still unbeaten, but Queens have two games in hand and have a chance to close in on Beauties. The Jacky Shipanga Academy U/15 team has grown in leaps and bounds since joining the league and on Saturday added another scalp to their list when they beat Poly Babes 1-0. Poly Babes immediately bounced back when they thrashed Windhoek College of Education 8-0 in the late match on Saturday. Their striker Ellencia Games scored five goals, to move up to third position on the goal-scorers’ chart with 12 goals.Poly Babes are now fourth on the log on nine points, followed by WCE and Shifidi High School (three each), Unam Bokkies on one and Angels United who must still open their account. – Additional reporting by Namibia Sport.corry@namibian.com.na
