Bank robbers still on the loose

POLICE in Windhoek have confirmed that N$96 000 in cash was stolen from the Standard Bank service centre in Windhoek’s Northern Industrial area during an armed robbery there on Monday morning.

While the bank insisted in a press statement issued on Monday that no one was harmed during the robbery, Police yesterday reported that the three robbers had tied up employees and assaulted them before rushing off in a grey Ford Bantam bakkie belonging to a bank employee. Besides the money, they also apparently made off with a number of cellphones and keys. The bakkie was later found at the Rhino Park bus stop.No arrests had been made by yesterday afternoon.* In yesterday’s edition of The Namibian it was erroneously reported that no arrests have been made yet in connection with an earlier armed robbery in which about N$197 000 was stolen from Standard Bank’s Klein Windhoek branch on March 9.In fact, the Namibian Police arrested a 39-year-old Zimbabwean national, Bakani Dube, on March 16 in connection with the incident.Dube made a first appearance on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on March 19, and remains in custody.Besides the money, they also apparently made off with a number of cellphones and keys. The bakkie was later found at the Rhino Park bus stop.No arrests had been made by yesterday afternoon.* In yesterday’s edition of The Namibian it was erroneously reported that no arrests have been made yet in connection with an earlier armed robbery in which about N$197 000 was stolen from Standard Bank’s Klein Windhoek branch on March 9.In fact, the Namibian Police arrested a 39-year-old Zimbabwean national, Bakani Dube, on March 16 in connection with the incident.Dube made a first appearance on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on March 19, and remains in custody.
