THE fourth round of the DTS-Maerua Superspar Beach Volleyball Series took place at Swakopmund at the Tiger Reef Bar recently.
With clear-sunny skies and hot temperatures due to the east wind in the morning the tournament attracted 25 teams in four categories.These were a 4-a-side social mixed, 2-a-side -men, ladies and youth teams.The 4-a-side competition saw ‘old rivals’ OTB and Jumpin’ Potatoes battle it out once again in the final. OTB won the first set comfortably 21-12, but Jumpin’ Potatoes came back in the second set winning 21-17. The third decisive tie break set saw OTB and their main attacker Peter Brinkmann, keeping the pressure on the Jumpin’ Potatoes and winning 15-9, clinching their third consecutive title. Third place went to the team Farmer’s Attack who beat Swakopmund based team Fantastic 4.The men’s final was played between no. one seed Antereo Epifanyo/Rector Mbeha and no. two seed Ruben Delie/Michael de Koe. Epfanyo/Mbeha showed great skill during the whole tournament and they easily won the match in 2-0 sets, their second victory in a row. Third place went to Heiko Diehl with his partner Kamwi Sezuni.The youth division recorded eight teams and no. one seeded team Viggo von Scheliah/Helmo Minz easily moved their way through the games into the final. Their opponents, no. two seeded team Moritz Beth/Michael Falk were trying to break the winning path of von Scheliah/Minz who won the last two tournaments. Beth/Falk were fighting hard, but in the end, von Scheliah/Minz won in two sets, 21-16, 21-19 to clinch their third victory of the season. Third place went to Paul Gschwender/Jonathan GurirabIn the ladies division, eight teams battled it out in windy conditions. No one seeded team and winner of the last three tournaments, Anita Kinder/Karin Curschmann, lost their first match this season to no. four seeded Swakopmund based team Lizette Roettcher/Birte Fahrbach in 2-1 sets. Kinder/Curschmann had to fight their way back in the loser’s round and managed to reach the semi finals where they faced no. two seeds Simone von Wietersheim/Sabine Pampe. Von Wietersheim/Pampe managed to beat the no. 1one seed teams in three sets to advance to the finals. In the second semi final Rottcher/Fahrbach had no problems winning against Katja Biesemann/Nicole Giberson 2-0. In the final von Wietersheim/Pampe could not recall their skills and and were beaten 2-0 by the local Swakopmunders Roettcher/Fahrbach who won their first tournament this year.
