ROBBERS who stole thousands of dollars from a shop on Independence Avenue in the centre of Windhoek in broad daylight on Friday strolled out of the store in a leisurely fashion with their ill-gotten loot.
Anesh Morar, the Manager of Chelsea Fashions, yesterday decried what he termed the “arrogance” of the criminals. “They didn’t even run, they strolled out and walked across the street,” said Morar.”It just says something about the level of their arrogance. They didn’t even have masks or try to hide their faces.”The five robbers, each armed with a pistol, walked into the fabric garment shop on Friday afternoon and knocked the security guard down with their guns. They then ordered everybody in the shop – about 20 customers and 15 staff – to lie on the floor, shouting at them in Afrikaans that if anyone looked up they would shoot, said Morar.”They were all Namibians, without a doubt,” said Morar, who put his conclusion down to the “accents”.The robbers helped themselves to cash and cheques before walking out of the shop, crossed Independence Avenue and got into a white car that was waiting in the main parking lot.The Police reported that N$50 000 was taken, but Morar said they were still assessing their losses.* Police on Sunday incorrectly reported that Fashion World was the shop which was robbed.Zaid Ismael of Fashion World said that his shop had not been robbed and that it had been confused with Chelsea Fashions.”We want to reassure the customers that we have maximum security with hidden cameras all over the store. Our security is pretty tight. We would also like to inform the public that no cash is kept on the premises,” said Ismael.”They didn’t even run, they strolled out and walked across the street,” said Morar.”It just says something about the level of their arrogance. We would also like to inform the public that no cash is kept on the premises,” said Ismael.
