Arrests soon in Nelspruit murder

MPUMALANGA police are hoping for a breakthrough soon in the Nelspruit murder of ANC councillor Jimmy Mohlala, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

‘We expect some arrests soon,’ said Captain Leonard Hlathi.
He declined to comment on rumours that Mohlala, the speaker of the Mbombela municipality in Nelspruit, was the victim of a political killing. Hlathi said such statements were ‘totally out of order’.
‘We don’t talk about politics. The police are investigating only murder, that’s it,’ he said.
Mohlala was gunned down outside his Nelspruit house in front of his son – who was shot and injured – on Sunday evening.
Mohlala was in the news last year for reportedly blowing the whistle on alleged corruption in a 2010 construction project.
At the time of his murder, the African National Congress was in the process of taking disciplinary action against him for refusing to step down as speaker after the party recalled him. Afrikaans daily Beeld reported on Tuesday that Mohlala last year received death threats via SMS. – Nampa-Sapa
