ANNA needs money to host Nations Cup

WINDHOEK – The successful hosting of the much-publicised Senior Netball African Cup of Nations (Afcon) depends on the availability of funds from the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC).

All Namibia Netball Association (ANNA) President Carol Garoes yesterday hinted that the lack of finances has put the association in an awkward position. She said Namibia is indebted to host the continental showpiece as countries are working around the clock to compete in the event, scheduled to take off either at the end of April or beginning of May.She said the time frame of the NSC financial year is still workable, adding that the financial budget submitted to the NSC still stands.”It’s not a lot of money we requested, it’s just a few hundred thousand [dollars],” said Garoes. In his response, NSC chief administrator Rusten Mogane said the budget requested by ANNA is high, but advised ANNA leadership to submit a reasonable budget in advance.Mogane said the Commission has exhausted its budget at the moment, but is confident that the issue will best be dealt with once the 2007/08 budget is approved.Mogane called on all sport associations affiliated to the NSC to submit their budgets in advance. The long-awaited Afcon showpiece will take place at Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.Namibia will have men’s and women’s teams competing at the event.Meanwhile, ANNA’s annual general meeting (AGM) will take place at Katima Mulilo on March 24, and will be preceded by a constitutional workshop, which will bring the regional constitution in line with ANNA’s constitution as required by the Sport Act.NampaShe said Namibia is indebted to host the continental showpiece as countries are working around the clock to compete in the event, scheduled to take off either at the end of April or beginning of May.She said the time frame of the NSC financial year is still workable, adding that the financial budget submitted to the NSC still stands.”It’s not a lot of money we requested, it’s just a few hundred thousand [dollars],” said Garoes. The long-awaited Afcon showpiece will take place at Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.Namibia will have men’s and women’s teams competing at the event.Meanwhile, ANNA’s annual general meeting (AGM) will take place at Katima Mulilo on March 24, and will be preceded by a constitutional workshop, which will bring the regional constitution in line with ANNA’s constitution as required by the Sport Act.Nampa
