WASHINGTON – Screen siren Angelina Jolie called Wednesday for prosecution of the perpetrators of genocide in Darfur, Sudan, urging that those responsible for the violence be dealt with “consistently and severely.”
“Until the killers and their sponsors are prosecuted and punished, violence will continue on a massive scale,” Jolie wrote in Wednesday’s Washington Post. “Ending it may well require military action. But accountability can also come from international tribunals, measuring the perpetrators against international standards of justice,” the actress wrote from Bahai, Chad, where she was visiting a camp on the Sudanese border filled with Darfur refugees.”When crimes against humanity are punished consistently and severely, the killers’ calculus will change,” she wrote.”People may disagree on how to intervene – airstrikes, sending troops, sanctions, divestment – but we all should agree that the slaughter must be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice,” said Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.Nampa-AFP”Ending it may well require military action. But accountability can also come from international tribunals, measuring the perpetrators against international standards of justice,” the actress wrote from Bahai, Chad, where she was visiting a camp on the Sudanese border filled with Darfur refugees.”When crimes against humanity are punished consistently and severely, the killers’ calculus will change,” she wrote.”People may disagree on how to intervene – airstrikes, sending troops, sanctions, divestment – but we all should agree that the slaughter must be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice,” said Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.Nampa-AFP
