An Inexplicable Thing

An Inexplicable Thing

COULD someone explain to me why it is that the alleged murderers of the Swakopmund jeweller are able to walk free on bail, as well as many other criminals, yet a man who is accused of sodomy – nothing proven, and under unsubstantiated circumstances – is kept in jail?

Why are we so passive as Namibians to allow this to happen? Where is the power of the judiciary, which must be aware of this injustice, to make sense of this very dubious matter? A new hearing has been set for March! After all these weeks? And all this on what is only the claim of a man who might have been very happy to take money for services in the first place, but turned sour when the source of the money dried up? Surely that leaves each of us vulnerable to false claims, if the Police, with the support of the magistrates, work inefficiently? The professional methods of the Police and court officers need to be carefully examined, and we need some fair play at work here. If Mr Berndt is guilty, let him pay the price, by all means, but what is happening is not right, and we all know it.I appeal for some decency and common sense to come to the fore here. Please, would someone in authority take some action! Somehow I am reminded of the woman in Walvis Bay who abandoned her baby, and the difficulty she had in getting bail. What, I wonder, could the common factor between these two cases be? Was she also a flight risk? No, I don’t think so.The whole scenario is very scary, and very damaging for Namibia.Horrified SwakopmundIf Mr Berndt is guilty, let him pay the price, by all means, but what is happening is not right, and we all know it.I appeal for some decency and common sense to come to the fore here. Please, would someone in authority take some action!
