Information and communication technology deputy minister Modestus Amutse says opposition party leaders are “stupid” and the public should not listen to them.
He also says opposition leaders are mentally ill.
Amutse made these remarks at a Swapo gathering at Oshakati on Sunday.
“Some of them have been in existence since before independence, yet now they are telling you to vote for them. I chase them away from my village.”
Amutse questioned whether opposition parties think Namibians are stupid.
“You have been here but you can’t even come up with a single law. I have never seen a law introduced by opposition parties.
“There are those who say they can govern better than others. Ask them where they have governed? Where are their records? What is their history?”
Amutse is a former Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) journalist who became a member of parliament in March 2020, after serving as Oshikuku constituency councillor from 2010 to 2019.
He claimed no other party besides Swapo is capable of governing Namibia.
He said since independence, Swapo has been responsible for training teachers.
He further asserted that Namibians will soon have a larger stake in the mining sector, which he predicted would rise to above 50%.
Speaking at the same event, former Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) parliamentarian Vipuakuje Muharukua said his decision to join Swapo in June was well-considered and not taken lightly.
Muharukua served as an opposition party legislator for nine years before resigning.
He said Swapo is “the best party to lead this country”.
“I have thought about this for a long time. Not only have I reflected on it extensively but a number of comrades have also spoken to me about it, and my conviction grew stronger, leading me to stand here today with assurance.”
He urged party members and supporters to ensure Swapo receives maximum votes and expressed confidence in Swapo’s presidential candidate, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
“Someone may come to you and say we need change, we need another leader, or that leader will do ABCD, promises … How can you believe that if they can’t even organise their own households?”
He said while people often express a desire for change, not all change is beneficial and those who claim they can do better cannot effectively lead the country.
Speaking at the same event, Swapo Party Youth League secretary Ephraim Nekongo said those saying the party hasn’t done anything are lying as Swapo constructed hospitals, schools and electrified villages.
He described those promising jobs as being unemployed themselves.
PDM president McHenry Venaani said Amutse has no political pedigree apart from being a journalist who promoted Swapo on NBC.
“They have failed … people are hungry.”
Venaani said the PDM wants jobs, better homes, living conditions, manufacturing and agriculture.
