Aminuis farmer fighting for life after robbery

A FARMER from Aminuis is fighting for his life in the Medi-Clinic hospital in Windhoek after he was shot in his mouth on Friday.

Robbers shot at Piet Bergh (42) on Friday morning when he was delivering meat to a butchery in Nelson Mandela Avenue in Eros.According to Deputy Commissioner Silvanus Nghishidimbwa, one bullet entered Bergh’s head through his mouth. It is understood that by yesterday, the bullet was still stuck in his head. The incident happened between 08h00 and 09h00 on Friday.By yesterday afternoon, no one had been arrested in connection with the shooting.Nghishidimbwa said the Police are investigating a case of armed robbery and one of attempted murder. It is unclear how many suspects were involved, he said.Bergh reportedly made a delivery to Porky’s Meat Market, also in Nelson Mandela Avenue, and received his payment. His next stop was Windhoek Meat World Wholesalers further down the road. Apparently he had just parked the truck on the pavement in front of the butchery when an unknown number of men who were waiting in a taxi approached the truck and fired two shots through the cab. One of the bullets hit Bergh in the face. His co-driver allegedly jumped from the truck and ran away. The robbers grabbed the money and two fled in a taxi while one ran down the Klein Windhoek Riverbed.’I came driving down Nelson Mandela when I saw the truck halfway in the street and a lot of people running. I stopped my car to see who needed help. When I got to the truck I saw a man who was bleeding severely from the wound in his face. With the help of the butchery owner we pushed him out of the way and drove him to the Medi-Clinic Hospital in his truck,’ said Charles de Sousa, an eyewitness. Speaking from his farm in the Leonardville area, a relative of Bergh’s yesterday morning said the family does not want to comment on the incident at this stage.Nghishidimbwa said it is unclear how much money the robbers got away with.
