American cars are like AIDS, says MP

DEPUTY Minister of Higher Education, Training and Employment Creation Hadino Hishongwa says the Police force’s lack of transport is its main pitfall, and has likened the situation to HIV-AIDS.

“We must solve this problem. American cars are a decision just like HIV-AIDS.They have come to destroy this nation,” Hishongwa claimed when the Police budget for the 2004-05 financial year was put to the final vote in the National Assembly on Monday.Referring to the hundreds of Chevrolet vehicles Government bought for the Police force some years ago, Hishongwa claimed they were “useless” and were “draining the nation”.He drew the Assembly’s attention to the “many graveyards” for these Chevrolet vehicles that, he said, were beyond repair.Hishongwa was of the opinion that the Police force deserved strong financial support to enable them to protect the nation. However, he said, although they were trying hard to combat crime, it was not always possible.”They always have a problem wherever you go.The problem always concerns transport. They don’t have vehicles to rush to a crime scene,” he said, “for our police force are using these vehicles that can sometimes not even perform.”Hishongwa said Government should in future consider “cheaper” and “more reliable” vehicles for the Police force.American cars are a decision just like HIV-AIDS.They have come to destroy this nation,” Hishongwa claimed when the Police budget for the 2004-05 financial year was put to the final vote in the National Assembly on Monday.Referring to the hundreds of Chevrolet vehicles Government bought for the Police force some years ago, Hishongwa claimed they were “useless” and were “draining the nation”.He drew the Assembly’s attention to the “many graveyards” for these Chevrolet vehicles that, he said, were beyond repair.Hishongwa was of the opinion that the Police force deserved strong financial support to enable them to protect the nation. However, he said, although they were trying hard to combat crime, it was not always possible.”They always have a problem wherever you go.The problem always concerns transport. They don’t have vehicles to rush to a crime scene,” he said, “for our police force are using these vehicles that can sometimes not even perform.”Hishongwa said Government should in future consider “cheaper” and “more reliable” vehicles for the Police force.
