A MULTI-FACETED approach to crime prevention must be adopted by the State’s legal fraternity, says Attorney General Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana.
Speaking at the opening of the second annual conference of the Office of the Attorney General at Swakopmund yesterday, she said the level of crime in the country “demands from us more than what was sufficient in the past”. “We cannot allow crime and unscrupulous individuals to steer the destiny of our country into the abyss,” she underlined.Iithana asked the more than 140 employees from the Attorney General’s office attending from all over the country to make contributions on how the Office could increase capacity, enhance efficiency in litigious and non-litigious work, increase pro-activity in constitutional and statutory functions, enhance relations with different stakeholders and enhance client and public relations.The AG also reminded the gathering to remain vigilant and to consider the effects of HIV-AIDS and how it could affect their case loads.”Already, we have had instances where the continuity of court cases becomes doubtful as either the accused or the witnesses perish due to the pandemic.”The theme of the conference is ‘Better Serving Our Clients and the Public Interest’.Most court cases across the country had to be postponed for the two days of the conference with most of the magistrates and prosecutors in attendance.”We cannot allow crime and unscrupulous individuals to steer the destiny of our country into the abyss,” she underlined.
