Namibia’s ambassador to China, Elia Kaiyamo, has called on African countries to invest in information access and thus close the digital divide.
Kaiyamo said this during an online workshop held under the theme ‘Innovation, Science and Technology in a Contemporary World’ on Friday.
It was organised by the Information Africa Organisation and attended by representatives of various African countries.
“It is my appeal for our African governments to invest in ensuring that all people have access to information and bridge the digital divide,” Kaiyamo stated.
The ambassador said it is necessary to make sure all people have access to important technological devices and information.
“Efforts must be made to bridge the digital divide and ensure that marginalised communities and rural areas can also benefit from this advancement,” Kaiyamo noted.
He said innovation, science and technology fuels a country’s development, which he believes African countries need to utilise as transformation is taking place.
“Innovation, science, and technology are the driving forces behind the transformation of any country and I think as Africans, we need to take advantage of the current revolution and make sure that we do not lag behind,” he said.
Innovation, science, and technology possess the ability to improve industries, communication and quality of life, Kaiyamo said.
