A TRIAL-AWAITING prisoner with two pending housebreaking charges against him escaped from Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Gerrit Rooi, who had evaded arrest for a lengthy period after allegedly committing the break-ins, was arrested at a farm near Tses on Friday by the Police Special Reserve Force following a public tip-off.
Police Deputy Commissioner Johannes Tsuseb said Rooi had ‘slipped away’ from the Police at court.
Tsuseb said the possibility of negligence on the part of the Police officers on duty at the court was being investigated.
He described Rooi as dangerous. According to Tsuseb, Rooi reportedly threatened to shoot people prior to his arrest on Friday.
‘At the time of his arrest, Police body-searched Rooi, but could not find a firearm in his possession,’ he said.
He urged people who might know Rooi’s whereabouts to contact the nearest Police station.
