MORE than 200 Chinese business people who have returned to Namibia after visiting China have been put under self-quarantine due to the spreading coronavirus outbreak, the NBC has reported.
In an exclusive interview with the national broadcaster, Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhang Yiming said about 206 of the Chinese nationals returned to Namibia since 15 January following visits to China.
Ninety-six of them are employed in state-owned enterprises in Namibia, while 110 work for private entities.
The Chinese embassy's spokesperson Helen Lu told The Namibian this evening that the Chinese diplomatic mission was not sure if the Chinese nationals were infected with the coronavirus, but as a cautionary measure they decided to go under self-quarantine for 14 days.
“We don't want to cause any panic amongst any Namibians so we want to make sure that the nationals have no symptoms of the virus,” she said.
She added that after the 14 days of quarantine the Chinese nationals would be allowed to move freely.
The Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhang Yiming, told the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation today that the self-quarantine instructions are in place to ensure the safety of Namibians.
“I cannot allow any one single Chinese national who might be infected, if he knows and come back to Namibia [to] just then transmit this virus. That would be a disaster. So zero imported infection cases it's the one target not only for me [but] for the Namibian government,” he said.
The Namibian reported early in February that several shops in the China Town shopping complex in Windhoek remained closed since the festive season. The shops are owned by Chinese nationals who travelled home over the festive season but were unable to return because of a travel ban that the Chinese government imposed. However, the Chinese nationals have since returned and were placed under self-quarantine.
The ambassador also urged the public to inform his embassy if any Chinese national who had recently returned to Namibia after visiting China was not adhering to the self-quarantine instruction.
