MOST of Namibia’s players were knocked out in the first round of the International Tennis Federation Southern African Junior Championships in Windhoek yesterday.
In the Girls Under 16 category, the top seeded Sedi Jacobs made short work of Nomupendulo Dlamini of Swaziland, winning the match 6-1, 6-0.
Jacobs will now meet Keren Muswere of Zimbabwe who beat Ritumetse Metso of Lesotho 6-3, 6-1.
Jacobs’ compatriot Jessica Riddel was however knocked out of the U16 category after losing 6-2, 6-4 to Claudia Sumaia of Mozambique.
In the Girls Under 14 category, all of Namibia’s representatives lost their matches.
Steffi Schultz beat Solaya Mumena of Zambia 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 in her first match, but then lost 6-4, 6-0 to Kimberly Bhunu of Zimbabwe.
Cari Spangenberg lost 6-3, 6-0 to Mareta Nhamitambo of Mozambique, while Nina Burger lost 6-3, 6-2 to Neelo Bapelo of Botswana and Gina Moolman lost 6-2, 6-2 to Amelie Boy of Mauritius.
In the Boys Under 16 category, all of Namibia’s representatives were also knocked out.
PD Theron beat Fabio Mendes of Mozambique 6-2, 6-3 in his first match, but then lost 6-1, 6-1 to Kukultla Motlojoa of Lesotho.
Katu Jacobs lost 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to Emanuel Mabechu of Botswana, David Edmunds lost 7-6, 6-1 to Marcel Rabenirina of Madagascar, and Veja Hinda lost 6-1, 6-3 to Neo Makhakhe of Lesotho.
In the Boys Under 14 category, Nguvi Hinda beat Thato Holmes of Botswana 6-1, 6-3, but Dantago Gawanab lost 6-1, 6-2 to Khetla Khetla of Lesotho and Petrus Burger lost 6-0, 6-1 to Sakhle Shabangu of Swaziland.
