Summer Cup launched at Ongwediva
ONGWEDIVA – The annual Metropolitan Summer Cup, which is regarded as one of the most prestigious sports events in northern Namibia, was officially launched at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region on Monday night.
The Summer Cup attracts an assortment of young footballers and netballers from the northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto.
Deputy Minister of Sport Pohamba Shifeta and Metropolitan Namibia Managing Director (MD) Jason Nandago were at Ongwediva to launch the competition.
“We have hosted the Metropolitan Summer Cup for the past six years. The event is growing in leaps and bounds and has become a household name in the regions,” Nandago said.
He said the tournament has not only brought enjoyment to the competitors, but it has also augmented the impact of the legacy of the embodiment of leadership, discipline, respect and friendship among the youngsters.
‘Making the choice to sponsor a sporting event was, for Metropolitan, the easy part. It was easy because play comes naturally to children, particularly with regard to soccer and netball.”
The tournament’s sponsorship has grown from an initial N$50 000 to an investment of N$130 000 this year.
Shifeta said the Metropolitan Summer Cup has always surpassed expectations by showcasing athletic performance of the highest caliber and preparing young athletes to enter club championships and qualify for platforms in the junior and senior national teams.
The starting date for this year’s tournament is yet to be decided, while its final matches are expected to take place on 22 September at the Oshakati Independence Stadium. – Nampa
