Kwata Cricket launched
WINDHOEK – Cricket Namibia on Wednesday launched a new development programme for primary schools known as ‘Kwata Cricket’. Speaking at the launch, Cricket Namibia Chief Executive Officer Laurie Pieters said the programme is to introduce cricket to younger children at school, adding that the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) will educate the young children on violence, women and child abuse, HIV-AIDS and alcohol and drug abuse.
According to Pieters, eight development officers have been employed by Cricket Namibia to advance the development programme.
A total of 3 000 children are exposed to this programme as the eight development officers teach these children every day during their physical education classes, said Pieters.
The children are being taught the basic rules and laws of the game.
“We have introduced the programme at schools in the Erongo, Otjozondjupa and Oshana regions and are planning to introduce it in the Karas region,” he added.
Pieters said 450 children are from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay schools while eight schools in Oshakati are part of the programme.
Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) Chief Administrator Rusten Mogane urged Cricket Namibia to introduce the programme in other regions.
He added that cricket was seen as an expensive sport and that those from previously disadvantaged communities had no opportunity to play cricket in the past. – Nampa
