Karas netball rises again
By: STAFF REPORTERTHIS year looks promising for netball in the Karas Region with the Sports Commissioner’s commitment towards netball in Namibia.
The Karas Region elected their new executive team in Keetmanshoop last month with Cecilie Swartz as chairperson, Gladys Sekwate as vice chairperson, Snobia Smith as secretary and Monia Tjongarero as public relations officer.
The election was convened and facilitated by the Sports Commissioner Rusten Mogane.
The Karas netball league came into force in 2009, chaired by Sekwate, after more than eight years of absence from the local netball scene.
A total of eight teams were registered during 2009 and the league was won by the Skorpion Zinc Netball Club.
The aim now is to have greater participation by clubs in the surrounding areas, especially the villages.
The committee plans to visit towns like Noordoewer, Aussenkehr, Oranjemund, Berseba, Tses, Bethanie, Koës and Aroab to create greater awareness and participation in the league.
Clubs participating in the league faced financial constraints last year and in this regard local businesses are urged to pledge their support for the game of netball by sponsoring clubs in their area.
Having had a Karas player (Upe Ugwanga) in the national team that represented Namibia in the Cosana games last year, the Karas Region has the potential to produce talented and committed players that can represent Namibia on international level.
The region has a lot of young girls who are eager and determined to excel in the game of netball but their dream can only be realised through the relentless development and support from all stakeholders in the Karas Region, which includes the community, businesses and the Ministry of Youth and Sport.
New teams that would like to join the league can contact Monia Tjongarero at 081 201 1994 or Cecilie Swart at 081 234 7433.
