Ambunda is the best: Nestor

By: SHEEFENI NIKODEMUS

NESTOR Tobias believes that Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda is on track to becoming a world boxing champion and is currently the best in his weight class. The renowned Namibian trainer and promoter said he is grooming Ambunda for the world title, starting with tomorrow night’s World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa bantamweight title defence against South African challenger Klaas Mboyane at the Windhoek Country Club.

“Ambunda is world-class fighter. He is the best in his division,” Tobias said yesterday.
Ambunda himself believes he is the man to restore the country’s place at the pinnacle of world boxing after the dramatic world lightweight title loss of his namesake and stable-mate Paulus ‘The Hitman’ Moses to Venezuelan Miguel Acosta in May.
The pint-sized pugilist is fast becoming a crowd puller with his playful but effective ring theatrics. Tobias says his fighter will be ready for a shot at the coveted global crown after a few more fights and an improved world ranking. He is currently ranked 8th.
“Our target is the world title. If he wins this fight, he can jump to number five in the world.
“We are looking at two more fights for him before the end of the year, then next year he can be invited by the champion challenge for the world title,” said Tobias.
Meanwhile Ambunda’s immediate obstacle, Mbuyane, is expected to complete his short journey to the land of the brave early tomorrow morning.
“He is a south-paw fighter. We have worked very hard in training on how to fight him,” Ambunda said.
Tobias added: “He is a technical fighter with good movement in the ring. He moves around a lot so Ambunda will focus on his body to tire him. Then from there he can maybe knock him out.
“I’m very confident and I believe in my boxers
Other international opponents, a Zambian and a Zimbabwean trio, have already arrived for their support cast bouts against Namibian boxers tomorrow. They include Wilberforce Shihepo’s super middleweight rival John Chibuta from Zambia, and Zimbabwe’s junior lightweight fighter Tawanda Chigwida, Mordecai Donga a welterweight, and another lightweight boxer Lawrence Moyo, who will oppose Immanuel Naindjala, Tommy Hango, and Peter Malakia respectively.
Pohamba Mandume and Anthony Jarman kick-start the action in an all-Namibian junior welterweight bout at 19h00.
Tickets to see the fights can be obtained at the Boxing Control Board offices in BPI House, Kalahari Sands, and at the Windhoek Country Club at N$100.
