SMSes for Thursday 9 September 2010

SMS Of The Day

105TH BUILDERS’ Congress: Seems like most of the ‘experts’ will not be talking on construction. Why is no paper presented about how the prospective house owner is done in by architects who masquerade as building supervisors? And building contractors who have no clue and whose building foundations sink and walls crack and then all refuse to accept responsibility. Present a paper on how to protect ourselves from these unscrupulous and incompetent people.

Food for Thought

NAMIBIAN women, it’s high time we take charge of our destiny as well as to make an impact in business and politics. Let us organise a Namibian women’s summit next year where we invite women from different sectors such as mining, agriculture, manufacturing and finance. Let us make sure that women are empowered economically.

– Shiko, Okahandja women

Bouquets and Brickbats

TO you, the person thinking that the only way the ban on The Namibian should be lifted is if Gwen resigns or dies. What a mean and cruel person you must be! Shame on you! She is doing all of us a favour, ‘telling it like it is’. Good for you Gwen, we need more people like you in Namibia.

TO the person in yesterday’s SMS column that only wants to see the ban lifted once Gwen Lister has gone: Though she might pass on The Namibian will last forever and will be on the shelves and on the streets of Namibia. How can a person wish for the death of another? You are a forecaster of doom and should retract your stupid SMS.

– Boetie, Walvis bay.

TO the author of the SMS that suggested the Government ban on The Namibian be done away only after the death or resignation of Gwen Lister: You are a hater! Please be aware that haters are losers.

– The Patriot.

CONGRATULATIONS Comrade (Evilastus) Kaaronda on your re-election as SG of NUNW. I hope you will equally start addressing the Namcor issue as you rightly did with GIPF. I believe the workers mandated you to speak out against corrupt  practices and self enrichment by certain managers at SOEs. Aluta continua.

THE Okahandja power cut once again demonstrates the need to employ and vote competent people to administor our towns. Political voting, nepotism, corrupt and incompetent municipal employees should be vigorously rooted out if Namibia wants to maintain its success story.

OKAHANDJA, it is now our right to vote in responsible people who can answer to our problems.

– Iipinge.

OKAHANDJA in darkness. The Municipality did not pay NamPower and the town’s residents/businesses are suffering. Come elections the same leaders will want to be elected. Change, change.

– Arikana

In and From the Regions

I WANT to publicly thank the police officer who showed me mercy when I absentmindedly disobeyed a road sign. It was at a little village about 20 km east of Omuthiya. Thank you tate. Next time I will pay attention.

– Thankful from Tsumeb.

RUNDU Town Council, we are tired of water being shut off every day for the past months. Why should you decide when I have water in my house when I have paid up my bill? My water must be on the whole day and not just for a few hours.

– Tired and frustrated resident of Millenium Park.

WE are really tired and disappointed at what is happening in Rundu. The Council just shuts off water without informing us and they are giving us fat bills for nothing and for water that we are not using.

– Rundu resident

NABTA please tell us the price from Ondangwa to Omuthiya. We are charged N$44 while the price list showed to us has written N$38. If N$38 is wrong why can’t Nabta correct it to avoid conflict between taxi drivers and passengers?

City Fathers Please...

QUESTION: How come we do not have a street named after Mr Bryan O’Linn who was the founding father of the Namibia Peace Plan 435 movement to educate Namibians, who were resisting Independence, about the nature and importance for the only framework for lasting peace in the country – Resolution 435 of the United Nations. He was also instrumental in building bridges between white Namibians and Swapo leadership locally and in exile before Independence!

GIPF Saga

THE GIPF saga is a national disgrace! Managers etc must be held accountable and pay back the  ‘losses’ from their ill-gained fortunes! It is common knowledge that ‘buddy buddy’ risky loans” were ‘approved’ by incompetents! The mess must be sorted out now – no cover ups! Just do it!

– Local pensioner

I DON’T know why we are quiet on the issue of GIPF money. It’s our money that is squandered. It is impossible to borrow from our money but it is possible for it to be squandered. Come on workers, it’s time to raise our voice. First it was the Social Security Commission then GIPF. Which one’s next?

THE GIPF board of trustees and management must seriously consider the request from poor civil servants (not cadres) to give 25 per cent of our pension money so we can settle our bonds or buy used cars and other needs. Gatvol!

And Justice for All

I HOPE the RDP, RP and others will ask for forgiveness from the Supreme Court judges for accusing them not of not being independent.

Labour Issues

I WOULD like to ask the Areva Uranium safety officer if they aware that the workers at Trekkopje joint venture are operating on a machine that does not have ventilation and it’s very dusty and hot. Can the safety officer come and inspect this like other mines are doing.

– Concerned employees

I HAVE a question for the Khomas Regional Council. Why don’t they pay the student interns that are doing their attachment there? Other students at other institutions are getting paid?Students at the KRC can’t afford anything as they’re not paid at all. Please an urgent answer please.

General

SELFISHNESS, greed, a lack of love and care for thy neighbour, non-belief in the Lord God and in His powers are some of many reasons that have led our country into the present situation of corruption. Hundreds of millions of Namibian dollars are going missing without trace, while the majority of our people are languishing in poverty. Lord forgive these thieves for they do not know what they are doing.

Education

MINISTER of Education please advise the management of Unam that lecturers should be appointed on the basis that they had didactics ie are trained how to teach. The majority of the lecturers in my faculty do not know how to teach at all. Please help the students!

When will Nasaf take action against teachers who are not paying back their loans? Only a few are paying back, the majority are not. Is that fair? Nasaf stand up please!

Health Matters

DR (Richard) Kamwi, is it not possible to bring back the small white caps (I don’t know the correct name) which used to be worn by the nurses as well as their distinctive coats which were red inside. That dress code really made them look very professional.

– Mekupi, Oshakati.

Running the Show

EVERY month convoys of new Namibian Defence Force trucks drive inland from the coast. Is it only the NDF that gets funds for vehicles, because no new schoolbuses or ambulances are bought?

Sporting

I DON’T blame Tom (Saintfiet) for wanting to leave. The only way things can change is when the coach has his way. Right now it’s the Rukoros and Muinjos who are running the team.

Service Please

SERVICE please Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, if you call there is no answer and social workers are not available.

ONE Africa Television why don’t you have sign language interpeters? Nearly all of us deaf Namibians need to have information from your broadcasts. There are a lot of us deaf people who are interested in your TV progammes. Please include an interpreter in your broadcasts.

– Concerned deaf Namibians

Responses to recent SMSes

WOULD the person who sent in the comment on JJJ’s get in touch with me, Malcolm, at 0813437056. We value our customers highly and want to provide them with the best service at all times.

DRIVING with vehicle headlights when using public roads other than in towns should be compulsory in Namibia. Road traffic legislation should be amended soonest to compel any driver on a public road to switch on their lights.

PEOPLE using headlights on a sunny day freak me out! It is irritating and useless, except for motorcycles. If we can’t even stop people flying down city roads at 140 k/ph or more, how will ‘lights on’ help? Anyway the idea is a local fad. I have not seen it in any other country.

Note: On national roads it is definitely helpful for visibility in oncoming traffic – News desk

BY reading the SMS in The Namibian I totally agree about making a law to prevent having unprotected sex if one has HIV. By doing so we can save lives and lot of money wasted to prevent spreading the virus. It is about time the lawmakers do something good in the public interest.

PARENTS with problems with Ekulo SSS. Please address your problems to school authorities. We are now getting fed up with your SMSes complaining about petty issues.
