SMSes Of Monday 12 October 2009

* OH my gosh, I’m sick and tired of all this! Can’t we all just get along?

– S Hilaire

Food For Thought
* CITY cannot pay their debt. This is a problem experienced throughout Africa. This can be solved if people would cut back on spending money that they do not have to spend like the increase in salaries and entertainment allowances just approved in their new budget.
– ET

Politics
* COME on, Dr Elijah [Ngurare] of the so-called Mighty Swapo: wishy-washy will not do. The time has arrived to call a spade a spade and act accordingly!

* WE can make Namibia the smile of the world by standing together in unity. I just want to tell our respected leaders: Keep shining, don’t lose hope, always do the best.

Running The Show
* IN response to Hon Nahas Angula and Albert Kawana’s criticism of educated people leaving Namibia. The latter said people were educated with GRN money and they are unpatriotic. Really? Well let me tell you the GRN never paid for my studies. I studied in a country where tuition was free of charge and I paid for my living costs. I also obtained an honours degree via Unisa with a bank loan that I still owe. I have a family as well. I can’t get a loan because I don’t have collateral for my feasible business. I’m walking from office to office to at least start my small business. Opportunities are rare or reserved. Now if I leave, as I intend after elections, am I unpatriotic? What more could I do? What about my kids’ right to food and shelter, etc? Please reply!

Election Fever

Your vote is your secret

* FOR the sake of peace politicians and the ECN must embark upon post-election education. I observed in previous elections that some politicians made statements that could have frustrated our peace and stability. Politicians must be prepared to accept any result until sufficient grounds for foul play are established. We have all seen how such actions have ended up in Kenya, etc.

* MANY Namibians seem politically naive and unsophisticated. Nobody owes a political party any loyalty. A political party that has won the right to govern the country, should earn its support through its efforts to develop the country and to make life better for all its citizens (and not only an elect few, as those few who benefit from the MWR scheme). Blind loyalty is when somebody refuses, or is unable, to look objectively at a political party and its achievements or lack thereof, and vote for it regardless, even if the person knows deep down that that party does not serve the whole nation. Look objectively and vote with sophistication.

Bouquets And Brickbats
* VOTE of thanks. I really appreciate the quick actions Tses Police have taken for the drug trafficking taking place in our small town, Tses. You guys deserve to be applauded. Keep up the good work!
– Concerned community activist, Rickey Hanse

* THANKS to the NDF and NamPol for not discriminating against albinos. Both have recruited albinos. Two albinos are in the MoD and one is in the Ministry of Safety and Security.
– Wozani, Okalongo

* A FRIEND told me after a visit to Walvis State Hospital he was amazed. It’s spotless, obviously very well run, everything works, it’s better than some private hospitals, why! Anybody any comments?

* WELL done Obama for the Peace Prize! Just nine months in office!

* THANKS Gazza for not taking part in the 2009 music awards. Give the upcoming artists a chance. Viva role model.
– Auzi, Oshakati

* KEEP up the good reporting on the Brave Warriors, Corry. Tom and Barry have no right to deny us info on the team.
– Murphy, Keetmanshoop

* CONGRATULATIONS to the NBC’s acting DG and entire management and staff. You guys are so brilliant and for sure you deserve a reward. Then, can you please come up with more programmes targeting kids and youth participation, the nation is behind you. Well done NBC!

* MATTHEW Gowaseb, keep up the good work at NBC and always be fair and neutral to all Namibians. Thank you, commander.

Matthew Gowaseb

* MR Matthew Gowaseb of the NBC, where were you for the past 19 years of Independence? You just started acting for the past few months but you brought lots of highly appreciated improvements and new developments at NBC within a very short period. I wish you could have been with the NBC from 1990. Good work and keep it up.
– Waapandula noyaka Ondangwa

* CONGRATULATIONS SPYL comrade [Elijah] Ngurare! Even you sound reasonable when compared to ANCYL’s Julius Malema.

* I WOULD like to applaud Madam Lister for bravery. Considering that you are an objective and fearless journalist that some wish to silence. Your objectivity and credibility is also confirmed by SPYL members’ participation in the SMS page and other contributions. Is what you are subjected to not political persecution? But it’s people like you who keep some of us going in the civil society. Any other country would welcome you. You choose to stand for what you believe in, is that not patriotism? Of course! Namibian politicians must get used to being criticised, how else will they improve? (I am not white.)

* GWEN, the only difference between now and then is the government of the day. The Namibian is still telling it like it is. Before independence ‘The Nam’ was not favoured by the white regime, just because of the very same thing “telling it like it is”. We liked it because it was the truth. So why is it a problem? The current leadership liked it then, now they have problems with The Namibian. As long as you are telling it like it is, we will read it.

* CONGRATULATIONS Dr Ngurare for using and contributing to national democratic debate in The Namibian’s SMS page. You epitomise why the youth in Swapo must now come to the fore and the old guard of the struggle 20 years ago need to go into complete retirement and absent themselves from current affairs in the same way that they absent themselves from parliamentary duty. Viva change, it’s so much better than an unproductive holiday!

* NANTU and other educational authorities should start to realise that we teachers are not children and have a strict schedule to execute and will not tolerate anymore mistreatment or the total disregard of our profession and time! If awareness days or celebrations are arranged, please do it properly and in advance! Also check your statistics and know that we are more than 3 000 and not 700 or 1 000 and will not fit into a hall! Just do proper planning and no last minute programmes and dates. We prefer normal working hours to execute the never-ending syllabi! Thank you!
– Unhappy teacher!

Children Of The Struggle
* DEAR editor we are confused. Cabinet directed that people should move from Berg Aukas due to contamination. Now the same Cabinet wants to relocate Swapo kids there.
– We investigated and the Minister clearly said at the media conference, and in the media release, that relocation would be to the Farm Berg Aukas and not to the miners’ hostel at Berg Aukas where the contamination problems occurred. – Newsdesk

Education

Celebrations Japanese style

* CAN the Ministry of Education please explain as to why Grade 12 Ordinary and Core results are released in late January. Why don’t they release the results at the same time that the Grade 10 and Grade 12 higher level results are released in December. They are derailing us because South African universities require applicants to send their final exam results before 15 January.
– Peter Kambala

* I AM not happy with the way the Oshana Education Region is treating us as principals. We regularly order books, etc, but get nothing. Now we hear another school was allowed to buy books to the value of more two hundred thousand at the same the region has sent back more than two million to treasury while we have chronic shortages in our schools.

* PLEASE, University of Namibia, since we wrote our mature age test on September 12, we haven’t heard of the outcome. We need our results to enable us to apply for loans.

* TEACHER absenteeism is a contributing factor to the high failure rate in Grades 10 and 12. Teachers, the future of tomorrow’s leaders is in your hands. Bravo for those teachers who really care.

* MINISTER of Education, please make English literature exams compulsory for all secondary school grades. It’s the only way we combat failures in Grades 10 and 12. – Outapi

* PLEASE Polytech of Namibia send our feedback for assignments, we want to prepare for exams. And a lot of computers in the library are out of order, something must be done.

City Fathers Please ...
* THE City of Windhoek regularly advertises that Public Open Spaces are going to be consolidated and sold to developers – public open space near Sturrock Street being one. The City then invites objections to the proposed sales. Now, are there not C of W bylaws that prohibit the selling and development of such open spaces? Why were such open spaces created in the first place? The name of the company that is going to benefit is provided but the owners/ shareholders are not mentioned. How can the Windhoek ratepayers know that C of W officials or employees are not involved in, and benefit from, these sales? The City of Windhoek should give clarity on the matter.

Health Matters
I AGREE with my sister/brother that medical aid schemes are milking us. If one is sick, at most consulting rooms you won’t get helped without cash as member’s portion. I experienced that myself and had to turn to private clinics (no contribution fees and you get your medicine). Medical aid schemes, please become more passionate towards your members. We don’t know whether to turn left or right, and we are paying a lot of money towards the monthly contribution and it seems not be enough.
– Frustrated citizen

In And From The Regions
* NAMFI students (cadets) are begging money and food from people in the streets due to the fact that they don’t have anything to eat in the hostel. Ministry of Fisheries make an investigation, because these kids are suffering. These students are always coming to my house for food, I have helped enough.
– From Biochi, Walvis Bay

* WHY has Rundu beach still remained the same since year 2000? No improvement. We are tired we want to see a change.
– Ristho Mushongo

* I WOULD like to know from the Councillor of Sibbinda in Caprivi why electricity was given to certain villages and not all villages at Chinchimane? Why should others pay for a transformer to get electricity? What development did they bring to the people if it’s only a chosen few who benefited?
– MSN
* WE need speed humps at Onalunike. Please Roads Authority, do something before we lose four more young lives. How many more must die before you do something?

Please Help!

When is our’s opening?

* PLEASE can someone inform me when is the public community library in Lüderitz Street going to open? It was supposed to have opened at the end of July and is still closed.

* CAN someone tell me if I can get my driver’s licence with an automatic vehicle?

* WHEN will the sectional title act be amended? People are suffering from the body corporate. Please leaders hear our voices. We’re just pumping our money into the body corporates. Please do something.

* KFC, Spar and other shops in Windhoek. Please let us order and shop in peace. We are being asked for donations everywhere, inside and outside shops. Donations for school fees, for the deaf and for whatever.

Service Please
* PLEASE Agri Bank what happened to our resettlement loan application. It’s now four months.

Keep it clean

* I AM upset today (Thursday) I used a toilet next to Game store and you have to pay one dollar for the burglar door to open. But the toilet has a foul smell and there is no toilet paper. I don’t know what they are charging money for. Help!

Going AWOL
* IT’S only in Namibia, the Land of the Brave, that we ride, feed, nurse and play with a dead horse. This refers to the AWOLing parliament members and the attempt at changing the Constitution to allow more AWOLing!

Sporting
* NFA, please when are you going to recognise our sports legends? Give them positions, the likes of Safile Shivute, China Utoni, Bimbo Tjihero. These guys deserve ranks.
– MC
