Food For Thought
n NAMIBIA has been the dumping place of the so-called consultants from other countries with no credibility. This exercise drains our coffers while adding to the already prevailing poverty. When are we going to learn a lesson? Can Namibia establish a policy to set a standard of who qualifies to be a consultant to stop these fly-by-night fellows?
Where has all the diesel gone?
n GAM Combined School learners cannot study in the evening due to the fact that 4 200 litres of diesel delivered at the beginning of July 2009 was consumed on August 9. What a waste. Please inspector, deputy director, director of education in Otjozondjupa.
Politics
n IT takes 12 years to reach Grade 12. The country has been independent for over 18 years. Even the born-frees are now at tertiary institutions, yet the “so-called” liberation kids/adults are still blaming the liberation struggle, simply because they did not take their studies seriously. Mr President, you need to intervene.
– Junior
n THE appeal by Swapo Party for the RDP to stop its campaign, particularly in villages, is a non-starter. Swapo Party is on campaign trail itself 24/7 at funerals, during drought relief distribution, at national events and most importantly through incessant and one-sided TV broadcasts of Swapo Party meetings where insanities such as “don’t buy in RDP shops...” and “shoot bullets in the heads...” are more often than not uttered, though not always broadcast. That’s illegal and childish to say the least.
– Naumbabale
n GOVERNOR Kashuupulwa is being attacked by people who seem to have had a chance, at last, to drag his name in the mud. As far as I understood him, the governor advised that all political parties should wait for the Head of State to officially launch the election campaigns. He never said other political parties should not campaign in his region. The senseless noise is too much!
– Charles Steven
n TO Governor Kashuupulwa. Don’t misjudge the intelligence of the northerners by prescribing to us who we should allow to visit our houses for political purposes. I don’t need your consent.
n MISTAKES, everyone makes them but not admitting to it, you will not learn from it. Please (Peter) Iilonga why is it so difficult to admit to your utterances. Are all the people commenting on the issue in this paper also making up stories?
– Angie
n MY people, the man known as Peter Iilonga is a legend of our liberation struggle, a soldier, a political cadre who never wavered. He was choked with live electricity, engaged in many battles and spent more than 10 years on Robben Island’s notorious jail, but today he is treated strangely for what he spent his youth time fighting for. That freedom we have is what he fought for. He deserves to say anything he wants whether we like it or not. Aluta continua.
– Evari
n THANKS, God! We are in Namibia. In any other country ‘Hon’ Peter Iilonga could have resigned or been pushed out of the Government because of his hate speech. Here one can expect that in few days, the appointing authority will say that he was not aware ... and the party youth will praise the action. Proof? The Hon will lead the party list to the next elections. By the way, what was his contribution in the NA or in the Government? Let him inform us.
n IN a true democracy Deputy Minister Iilonga would have been taken to task publicly by his party and the appointing authority for his dishonourable utterances. We expect the same in Namibia. Please the President and the ruling party should not keep quiet when it suits them.
n IT seems the Deputy Minister Peter Iilonga was deliberately misquoted by the reporter. Else, why reader texts regarding the misquote have still to be published if the quote is reversed/rectified?
– Disgusted reader
– The Namibian’s reporter was at the meeting. He stands by his report. – News Editor
Health Matters
n H1N1 is spreading. Why not close all primary schools that are not writing exams to avoid further spread of the flu?
n WHILE schools cancelled their holiday tour to Cape Town due to H1N1 fears, why are learners from Emma (Hoogenhout PS) forced to go ahead?
n MINISTRY of Health, personally to Dr Kamwi, now we all know that H1N1 flu is spreading widely. So why don’t you order people to start distributing face masks to public places, where we can get it, to reduce the spread. I think that will be best before it gets worse.
– EM
– Please remember that the washing of hands is the first line of defence. We will keep readers abreast of whatever news and guidelines the Ministry announces. – News Editor
n MINISTER of Health please stop talking on TV. Come to Katutura Hospital. The lifts are not working, no blankets, holes everywhere?
Bouquets
And Brickbats
Say Aaaaaaah
n DEAR DR Jack Vries, thank you very much for the great job that you are doing for this nation as far as swine flu is concerned. It is really appreciated. Can people be vaccinated for this H1N1, as prevention is better than cure. Some people are living deep in the bush where media can’t reach them with information. So please doctor, do something about prevention if it’s possible. Keep up the good work doc!
– Anna, Oshikunde
– An H1N1 flu vaccine is still being tested and manufactured and won’t be available before November. We will keep people updated on its availability. – Newsdesk
n A BIG thank you to the taxi driver who found my documents and credit cards I forgot in his taxi on Sunday in Windhoek. Thanks for your efforts you took to drop them at the Ministry of Labour in Khomasdal where he dropped me. God Bless You.
– Heita
n DURING the colonial times The Namibian was the best newspaper because they were telling it like it was, but after the burning of some of their offices, The Namibian is no more consistent in reporting. Did the enemy strike fear in Madam G Lister?
– W Bay
– You have to be kidding, right? – Newsdesk
n DEAR Editor, biased reporting appears to be rife in the issue ‘Swapo tells opposition to suspend campaigns’ (August 12, pages 1 – 2) Why is reference only made to the Swapo and RDP representatives who are quoted? The meeting was also attended by representatives from the CoD and the DTA. Didn’t they say a word during the meeting? The Namibian, are you still ‘telling it like it is’.
– Both the DTA and the Congress of Democrats are mentioned in the article (refer paragraph 4 on page 1). The core of the story was about the Governor’s approach to the issue. It’s impossible to include every quote by every person. – News Editor
n THANKS to the NBC news comments (Wednesday) SMS of the Day, very well said. Just to add on those good comments – why two newsreaders? All the major broadcasters around the world only have one newsreader with the other seat being reserved for people being interviewed live on the news. Please let’s strive to be an African world-class broadcaster
n THANK you very much. I get good service at LG restaurant in Oshakati, especially from the one lady whose name I do not know. Mostly she is at the till. She has good manners and knows how to serve customers. Keep it up LG staff!
Running the Show
n INSPECTOR General and the management of NamPol, be so good and sell all Police houses (start in Windhoek first) and the profit you get, buy a big erf, build flats, rent out to members without accommodation and reserve some flats for transfers of members from other regions. This will be a long-term solution for members’ accommodation. Think about your members suffering in kambashus between tsotsis, while you are staying comfortable. This time at least be on their side, please. Thanks.
n HONOURABLE Minister of Safety and Security, especially the Department of Police, are you aware that there are civilian components who have served there for more than 14 years but are no longer enjoying their working environment. They are frustrated at not being promoted, by not getting long service rewards, etc. They are doing a wonderful job.
– Ndaloloka
n THIS registration of veterans has too many delays with too many different forms to be filled in but nothing concrete comes out. It’s like a delaying tactic before the elections. This filling of forms reminds me of those days in Nyango, Oshatotwa and Lubango where our names were written down almost every week only to be told after Independence that Swapo doesn’t have records of its people who were in exile. I don’t know why Government has found it fit now to create this ministry which I think is quite late. They could have thought of this just after Independence. They are now giving the poor Minister sleepless nights just to solve this mess in such a short time. Impossible.
Education
n THE factors that fail our education are inadequate materials, long distances to reach schools and unmotivated teachers. Let’s eradicate these factors and win.
– TIA
n SCHOOL in chaos! Can’t the GRN do something to resolve this issue? When should the financial books of a school be audited? Is it every end of the term or once in a year? If the person in charge of the financial books of a school leaves the school, then at least books should be checked to make sure that everything has been left in order. A staff member at JG v/d Wath Secondary School in Okahandja has just left? Who is taking care of the administration work now? I’m a parent of a learner at the school and I’m very concerned.
Polygamy
n RESPONDING to the SMS on polygamy: Polygamy in Namibia is not just practised by one culture as the SMS is saying, there are several cultures in Namibia practising polygamy. What we need to concentrate on is promiscuity in Namibia. Promiscuity is practised by 95 per cent of our population which is why HIV-AIDS figures are so high.
General
n WHY do doctors’ waiting rooms have outdated magazines? Often strange magazines in unknown languages. I am sitting in front of a pile of old magazines, some are as old as from 2003 on wildlife. The latest magazine is something called Weg from January. Hair salons are just as bad. Please get us readable relevant current magazines. Even if it means charging us a levy.
n CAN someone please let me know how long a change of surname takes? I did enquire at the counters and no one can help me. Also whom can I do inquiries with? If possible can you SMS me the answer – 0812464304.
n WHY does our Government not increase the pension for our elderly from N$450 to N$1 000. That will be better.
n IS there a new lottery called Scratch A Million Enterprise? Cards are $20. When was the launch?
Labour Issues
n WHY are people always resigning at the NQA? Such things need to be investigated by the responsible ministry.
n WE literacy promoters from the Oshana Region haven’t received our back pay since April 2008. Can the Ministry of Education tell us why because a long time has passed now?
– Jessy
n WE want hear from the manager of Wesco Waste Oil how long it takes for a worker to become permanent in the company? We are tired of being casual workers.
Service Please
What every customer wants
n I THINK it’s about time some employees get customer service training especially clothing and food shop employees. Their service really sucks. They don’t know how to talk to customers and they are extremely slow. We are really fed up now.
– Angry client
n STANDARD BANK, please change or repair the only Standard Bank ATM machine at Omuthiya. We are losing our money on charges to FNB.
n WORKERS in all big shops with bad manners should remember that they do not own those shops! They are chasing customers away with their attitudes! If I ask for help it’s because I need it, not because I’m trying to get you away from your chatty friends! This is going on especially at coastal shops, like Mr Price at Walvis Bay! It seems those people wake up in a bad mood!
n WESBANK, please review your policy of adding prime plus 3 % to applicants who don’t bank with FNB. Even when you persuade someone to move to FNB you never review your interest rate. So now I find myself as an FNB client but I am paying prime plus 3%! We also want to benefit from the lowered interest rates.

In And From
the Regions
n PRINCIPAL of Omuhama Combined School at Oshinyadhila, please get electricity to the school. We are tired of the solar panels that keep getting stolen. Surrounding villages have electricity what about us?
n SIMON se Gat, a shebeen in Groot-Aub – is it the only shebeen allowed to open 24/7, a drinking place for minors, noise throughout the week, vulgar language use, etc. Police, churches and the community let’s stand up and do something about this.
n COMRADE Kankoshi, please do something about Ompitula we need electricity and water in order to achieve the goal.
– Nicky, Uukwanambwa
n ARANOS Village Council, when will you provide electricity to the Bosduin, Nuwerus areas. You’re failing us.
– Concerned resident
n WE want a private pre-primary as well as a private school in Omuthiya Town. Our children are just sitting home.
n NBC-TV, improve your service at Grootfontein please. How is it when it comes to news time, the bulletin is just cut in pieces? We pay TV licences for better service, change please.
n IT is sad to notice that the Karas Trust Fund created in 2000 for regional development and equity provision has never been optimally utilised with its current balance of N$76,5 million judging by the extreme poverty in our region. This is a wake-up call for us not to make a mistake at the coming elections.
n OKAHANDJA Town Council please tell the nation where do you get money to buy lots of cars if people are suffering in Five Rand Camp? We want electricity in our shacks please! WE have waited since 2007? If you cannot deliver then give the money back to their owners. Please we want an answer on this matter!
n WHY is it that the people from the North are getting jobs in the South, but we from the South are not getting jobs in the North?
n HOW long we have to wait Hakahana location, Omaruru, to electrified? No public toilets, rubbish is not collected. No proper houses. We want a change. Tse otwa ya!
